The Holy City

Here's a performance by Jerome Hines in his later years:
"The Holy City" is a much loved warhorse. Second-rate lyrics and music, but still inspiring and a great vocal workout if you have the voice for it.
Hines was a basso at the Met. He's a rather wooden singer. Has two volume settings: stentorian and deafening. An impressive performance for a man in his mid-70s. Would be imposing for a man half his age.
Hines was an interesting guy. Had a degree in math and chemistry. Was an atheist until he says God began speaking to him. After that he became a very zealous Christian witness, which cost him some jobs–since the opera world is hostile to evangelical piety.
